Saturday passed with plenty of chilling out and a great brunch in town, the perfect cappucino (see photie) eggs benedict etc., picking up phone cards getting some supplies in and finally back to our verandah for The Big L ( long missing from my diet) and filling Richard's head with the local (Glasgow) tales of Rangers and Celtic and other nonsense.
Meanwhile on Sunday we set of for Mong Kok, a district in downtown Hong kong, think 'The Barrows' writ large. We used a taxi into Sai Kung, about 35HKD and then the MON KOK fast bus, 14HKD. It surely is fast. There is a red LED speedometer in full view at the front of the bus and when the bus exceeds(this is in the city streets mind you) 80KPH a bell rings and those who can, cheer...The Ladies Market in Mon Kok is what most people associate Hong Kong with, loads of bustle, noise and and cheap tat being offered at ridiculous prices usually about double or more what they'll accept. "Hello Mister, you want buy watch?, no cheap copy" (With women its bags)...their optimism never fails. I bought an FM module for my iPod which started off at 220HKD for 100HKD at current rates about £8.00, and it works.
Other delights include designer label(sic) lingerie, jeans, shoes and loads of food emporiums from Dai Pai Dong (street vendors selling such delicacies as fish balls (remember Marilyn and the Matzo...) fermented bean curd, seafood kebabs, octopus, squid and other fishy delights, Japanese, of course Chinese, Australian (don't ask, you've never lived), and the ubiquitous noodle bars (the best and healthiest as long as you can get over bones in your food) imagine Chicken Noodle soup with real noodles and a chicken's beak (or two if you're really lucky). We are on course for snake soup, without the bones, at some point.
We checked out the whole of Tung Choi Street (cheek by jowl with Elgin, Dundas and Fife Streets) before our feet gave out and realizing we had not caught up on the missing hours, we returned, another heart stopping drive, (Yvonne says she never really noticed since it was just like being in the car with me) to meet R&J at the Thai place in Sai Kung for dinner with drinks of tea and warm water, yes water, then embracing such wonders as Morning Glory ( greens and garlic), Yellow curry (vegetables), Beef and Chicken Satay, and a local(Thailand) speciality 'soup' called Tom Yam with lobster and other sea food like a Californian Ciopino (chowder) and Pad Thai which is a lip smacking collections of noodles, chicken and pork. Couldn't possibly have a pudding...as Max says, they spoil a good meal anyway.
Pause to refill my martini (without olives, too expensive, such hardships).
Richard brought us up to date with the Gerrish Expedition to India and The Incredible Journey from Xian to Glasgow, all overland. Imagine Judy with no high heels, conditioner and other necessities(ha ha ha ha ha). I'll put in a link to his blog a bit later if you would like to see Jude coping with life on the road. There will be of course, designer rucksacks and boots. And so to bed.
